Pearson, world’s leading learning company, organised an experiential session on a learning module of design thinking. I attended this event online and got the opportunity to learn about this famous concept from experts. Design thinking is an iterative process in which we try to understand our user and re-define the problems from a new perspective. This way we identify new strategies and dimensions. This session was delivered by Mr. Vikas Singh, MD, Pearson India. He has an experience of over 25 years and has managed various portfolios in marketing and business operations for leading companies. Mr. Varun Dhamija, Vice President Pearson Professional Programs, who has been a part of Pearson since 2009 and belong it achieve great heights. Joseph, Head learning and design at Pearson, an accomplished international educationist and learning program design. He took his training in design thinking and innovation by IDEO in the San Francisco head office. They conducted an insightful session on Design thinking.
Design Thinking is a methodology for creative and solution based approach to problem solving. It is a process apply to solve a challenging problem in business. It is an iterative process and differs from the analytical method of problem solving where we strategically define all the parameters of the problem in attempt to find a solution. Design thinking is based upon identifying and investigating with both the known and unknown aspects of the current situation to find out the hidden parameters.
This methodology is ‘human centred’ because it revolves around understanding the people for whom we are designing our product. We need to be humble and show empathy to our target user and understand his needs. The following are the phases of this type of approach to problem solving.
• Empathising with the target audience
• Defining our user’s needs, their problems and insights for the same.
• Ideating be challenging old assumptions and creating innovative solutions
• Prototyping to start creating the solution
• Testing those solutions
Design Thinking in Business
Every business has a target audience and a product for the same. This method helps in understanding a problem from the perspective of the user to find out the unknown opportunities which haven’t been tapped yet. For example, as a blogger, I find it difficult to reach the right audience which might love what I write and in return my blog would be successful. To reach the untapped audience I need to find out means to engage more and be empathetical towards my readers and followers. Design thinking would help me in searching for this audience and finding out a way to take my blog to them. I can find out new means of reaching to a new and relevant audience and writing my blog in sync with their needs (what they wish to read).
I loved learning about this new concept and how I can use it to be a successful blogger. The methodology is simple yet unused most of the times when we face a problem. I gained a lot of insights on what my extreme groups might be telling me and how I can improve my blog faster.
